Episode 22, and one more in the not-a-commentary film commentary series. Geoff and Adam revisit the watery disaster that was Waterworld and let the images inspire their chat: what are their favourite…
Geoff and Adam chat and drink and deconstruct movies in a sometimes silly, sometimes interesting fashion.
Episode 22 – Dive, dive, dive! The inspirations of Waterworld
Episode 21 The Not So Magical Ticket Trips Of 2001
Episode 21 and back to the ticket collection of a loser. Despite the Kubrickian suggestions this is anything but an auspicious year for film. Most of the films have faded from view or never deserved to be there in the first place. Still, it’s a fun trip.
Episode 19 – A Minority Chat During Some of Minority Report
Episode 19 and something of a gamble this one, but we tried to watch a film and see what commentary it would inspire… Time travel, utopias and the importance of specifying accents in the subtitles it turned out. We couldn’t even last the whole film.
Episode 20 – A Spring Break Into Some Reader Emails
Episode 20 and here we go again. We use Harmony Korine’s latest folly to chat feminism and how we talk about women, and then seamlessly ease into a reader email. Why is cinema special, is it important who you go with and do we ever feel like we’re wasting out lives? Good question…
Episode 18 – All Film and No Play Makes Blank a Blank Blank
A fresh episode is here! Are plays hoity-toity bullshit? Can they be made into good films? Does anyone care? Adam and Geoff do, even if they can’t afford theatre tickets. They even do musicals and Shakespeare. Contains moderate chuckling and substantial grumpiness.
Episode 17, part two – The Big Bumper Scrapbook of 2000
Part two and Adam’s Big Bumper Bag Scrapbook of Little Green Tickets From Yesteryear continues onward. 2000 may have started off excellently but it soon descended into a summer of dross. Dross that Adam would sometimes watch twice. For some reason.
Episode 17, part one – The Big Bumper Scrapbook of 2000
Episode 17, part one: or Adam’s Big Bumper Bag Scrapbook of Little Green Tickets From Yesteryear to give it Geoff’s full title. More reminiscing and another two-parter. 2000 proved an important year, but you’ll have to listen to find out why. Follow us/tweet us @outofthecanon. And enjoy.
Episode 16, Part Two – A Historical Memoir Review of 1999 In Film
Part two of Episode 16 and Geoff continues to plunge further into the films of 1999 as seen and treasured by Adam’s cinema ticket collection. Geoff is less than impressed with the quality, but the memories come thick and fast for our intrepid reminiscers.
Episode 16 (part one) – The Historical Memoir Review of 1999 In Film
Episode 16, and it’s a two-parter. It begins with a young Richmond starting a collection of his movie stubs in 1999. 14 years later and Adam and Geoff pick through all he saw, using the popcorn-soaked stubs as veritable madelines to inspire reflection and recollect time’s past. It’s a review show, but not as you know it.
Episode 15 – What If Sci-Fi Was Not Just For Nerds
Episode 15, Geoff and Adam kick off talking about Another Earth and Sound of My Voice as exciting examples of sci-fi. What starts as a high-brow investigation of what proper sci-fi is – does a film just need to be set in space, or does it need something more? – swiftly descends into a big Planet of the Apes digression. And then it ends in the patented Ridley Scott Game.
Episode 14 – From Small Unloved Ones to Stupid Shoot Em Ups
Episode 14 is a true ramble. Geoff starts off talking about Insidious, though he means Sinister. It’s a seamless chat taking in The Loved Ones, Cold Weather, Killing Them Softly, Shoot ‘em Up. Adam also defends Keanu’s honour, and Geoff bigs up Aniston.
Episode 13 – Oscar Yankee Cocktrot
Episode 13, and despite not being worthy of any attention, Adam and Geoff bow to popular demand and discuss the 2013 Oscar nominations. Things got overlooked, they got it horribly, horribly wrong… but enough about the podcast, what about the Academy’s choices?
Episode 12 – Why Can’t Hollywood Handle The Truth?
It’s Episode 12 and Adam and Geoff tackle real life for once. What are film-makers to do when tasked with making a true-to-life story? Stay honest and be responsible with the facts, or fudge the issues for the purposes for narrative expediency? Easy answer really, dunno why we bothered chatting about it…
Episode 11 – Life of Shi…te
It’s Episode 11!… Now, it may have come out weeks ago, but that’s not going to stop Adam and Geoff discussing the weighty themes of Ang Lee’s latest awards botherer. Less a review, more a bold exploration of what it means to be human… sort of.
Episode 10 – Gunning for Jack Reacher (and movie violence)
After a little break, Episode 10 is here. Adam took Geoff to see Jack Reacher, what could possibly go wrong? Turns out, quite a lot. But it does inspire a meaty chat about screen violence.
Episode 9 – King for an Evening
Episode 9, and what better way to celebrate the end of the year than a Stephen King themed podcast. He serves as the jump off point, primarily so Adam tell Geoff all about his love for Dreamcatcher. Think of all the questions you’d want answering about the horror maestro adaptations and hear them not being addressed.
Episode 8 – Adapt or Die
Welcome listeners all to Episode 8, where Geoff and Adam tackle the thorny issue of film adaptations of books and comics. It starts off highbrow and descends into the usual back-biting and shouting.
Episode 7 – Of Writers, and Spike, Mike and Charlie
A small one here, Episode 7, and something of a lead-in chat to the more structured and thematic Episode 8. Still, Geoff and Adam talk scriptwriters, then branch out to the films of Michel Gondry, Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman. Beware the abrupt start. And end.
Episode 6 – Masters Of Their Domain
It’s time for Episode 6, where Geoff and Adam use The Master as an excuse to talk about more interesting things, such as Parenthood, Adam Sandler and Antonio Banderas in Assassins. A good way to get drunk would be take a shot everytime Adam says ‘amazing’.
Episode 5 – We Need To Talk About Film
Something of a bonus here with Episode 5 – if by bonus you mean an even more shambolic mess than usual. Adam has a bone to pick with film criticism, what that bone is, he’s not sure, but with Geoff’s help they almost get to the bottom of the issue.
Episode 4 – Quintem Tarintonio’s Lynchpin
It’s Episode 4 time, and as Django Unchained hoves into view, Geoff and Adam tackle the films of Quentin Tarantino and try to find some nice things to say (it’s harder than it looks). The conversation then seamlessly switches to David Lynch, then back to Taruntonio, and ends very very abruptly.
Episode 3 Part Two – Hobbits, Afflecks and Jaffa Cakes
In Part Two, Adam and Geoff wander dangerously into Hobbit and Peter Jackson territory, and meander way off track to discuss, among other things, Argo and Ben Affleck. More importantly, Geoff gets a very important dressing down for his tea-making abilities during a very heated debate about Kill List.
Episode 3 – Summer Bummer
In Part One of two, Adam and Geoff look back on what Adam would have you believe was a disappointing year in movies. Geoff has other ideas. Their idle chat takes in the usual blockbusters and comedies, along with hidden gems such as The Raid and Dredd.
Episode 2 – Star Flaws
In episode number two Adam and Geoff talk Disney taking on the Star Wars franchise, with a nice diversion into the merits of the Pixar films (with some confusion as to whether Remy is a rat or a mouse… he’s a rat it turns out).
Episode 1 – SkyFail
In the debut episode, Adam and Geoff belatedly tackle the new Bond film, Skyfall, with many a digression and non-sequiter thrown in.
